WHAT IS STAR?

Guiding Students to Grow, Learn, and Shine

The STAR Program—short for Skills, Theory, Artistry & Repertoire—is the Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association’s annual evaluation program designed to guide and inspire piano students through every stage of learning.

Students are assessed in a supportive environment by experienced judges who provide encouraging, constructive feedback. Evaluations are open to students of all ages and levels—from beginners discovering their first melodies to advanced pianists preparing for performance careers.

Student can be evaluated in six core areas that develop well-rounded musicianship:

  • Theory: building a strong understanding of music fundamentals.

  • Technique: refining coordination, touch, and precision.

  • Ear Training: strengthening listening and recognition skills.

  • Sight-Reading: improving fluency and musical literacy.

  • Transposition: building flexibility and creativity at the keyboard.

  • Performance: expressing artistry through prepared pieces.

The STAR Evaluations are held every spring at the PYCO School of Music in Wexford, Pennsylvania, providing a professional yet encouraging setting where students can perform, grow, and celebrate their progress.
